The TopCut concept | Cut 'n' Sow

Ultra-shallow soil tillage with the TopCut from AMAZONE

Soil tillage is becoming increasingly important in arable farming, especially in view of the growing challenges posed by drought, chemical resistance and the requirements to reduce the use of plant protection agents. A key role is played by ultra-shallow soil tillage, stubble cultivation and catch crop management.

Ultra-shallow tillage with the TopCut has many benefits: The minimal working depth of between 0 and 3 cm preserves soil moisture. Capillarity is broken on the surface but remains intact underneath. The humus layer and soil life are protected by such shallow cultivation. Covering the soil with crop residues also protects the soil surface from erosion. Input costs can be reduced thanks to the low diesel consumption per hectare, high working speeds and low wear and tear costs.

With minimal soil movement, reduced wear and tear, and higher areas covered, ultra-shallow tillage can be carried out cost-effectively and efficiently. The soil structure and soil life remain undisturbed.

The TopCut concept

1. Two-section frame concept for quick folding to a transport width of 3 m.
2. As a leading tool, a single-row Knife roller is available as an option for the trailed models for intensive shredding.
3. Main tool segment with double Knife roller for all models, as well as a choice of double Knife roller, double Minimum TillDisc or a combination of Knife roller with Minimum TillDisc for trailed machines.
4. Harrows for combing out weeds are available in the rear for all models, and, for the trailed machines, there is also the option of packer roller for targeted reconsolidation.

Innovative establishment system Cut ’n' Sow – direct drilling taken a step further

The subject of soil tillage is becoming more and more significant when it comes to the purchasing decision-making on farms. The bigger the problems of lack of moisture, pests such as slugs, chemical resistance, and the requirements for reducing the amount of plant protection agents used, the more important the right means of soil tillage becomes. AMAZONE developed the TopCut cutting roller combinations for ultra-shallow soil tillage.

With the TopCut, the first stubble cultivation can be carried out ultra-shallow, thus saving a great deal of water and creating a perfect seedbed for volunteer grain and weed seeds. Once the unwanted plants have germinated, they are easily removed in a second pass. Furthermore, the intensive cutting and shredding of organic matter in the field stimulates the decomposition process. This improves field hygiene and reduces the transmission of fungal diseases and pests.

Cut 'n' Sow process with Topcut 6000-2 and Primera DMC 6000-2C for optimised direct drilling

The TopCut cutting roller combination can be used universally throughout the year for various applications – for catch crop establishment, for shredding harvest residues, and for mechanical weed control.

The Cut 'n' Sow process with TopCut is particularly effective with the Primera DMC large area seed drill, the Cayena trailed tine coulter seed drill, the Condor trailed seed drills and the Cirrus trailed cultivator drill with Minimum TillDisc from AMAZONE. Information about these drills can be found in the respective brochures.

Areas of application for the TopCut

  • Perfect stubble shredding in oil seed rape, sunflowers, maize stubbles and in catch crops
  • Improved straw management through uniform straw distribution
  • Promotion of straw decomposition as a result of mixing with fine soil on the surface
  • Mechanical weed control before sowing
  • Seedbed preparation with a high proportion of fine soil and optimum reconsolidation for reliable emergence

The benefits of ultra-shallow seedbed preparation when direct drilling with a large amount of organic matter present

  • Cost-effective, water-saving system for optimising direct drilling under difficult conditions
  • Reduction in the risk of blockages in tine coulter seed drills
  • Effective slug control
  • High output with low fuel consumption
